The 17th edition of Som Inter-Project Chess Championship 2024 has started today with over 100 participants from different categories. The is taking place at Sports Outreach Resource Centre, Kiwawu – Mityana road.

The four days tournament will end on 19th December. Players are grouped according to age groups including U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 and awards will be given according to Junior and Open in both girls and boys respectively.

Participants qualified from their respective centers that accommodate over 2000 children. They are seven different Som inter Project Chess Academy branches including Kampala, Gulu, Jinja, Kagadi, Masaka, Hoima and Budaka.

Robert Katende the founder of the tournament has applauded all the participants for the love of the game besides all the financial difficulties.

This tournament is aiming at transforming lives and instilling hope to the people through chess.

According to Katende, the tournament has two categories of players, which include rated and unrated players.

“On Thursday we shall be closing and different awards which include medals, trophies, and scholarships will be given to best performers,” Katende said.

The organisation promotes talents, implements discipline, help orphans with education, bail out the disabled with hope of being able and important like others.

The women defending champions open category, Patricia Nawuma came with impressive performance after wins in Rwabushenyi Memorial Chess Championship with a perfect win of 8/8 points. In that tournament, Nawuma won the women section with an unbeaten run.

SOM Chess Academy managed to register only 5 children in the tournament due to financial constraints.
