Uganda boosts Sports Infrastructure with 1.3 Trillion Shilling allocation

The Ugandan government has allocated 1.3 trillion shillings (approximately $361 million) for sports infrastructure development in the 2025/26 national budget.

Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, Hon. Matia Kasaija, announced the funding during the national budget reading at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

Infrastructure Projects

The funds will be used to develop various sports facilities, including:

  • Hoima City Stadium
  • Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium
  • Second phase of Mandela National Stadium (Namboole) renovations
  • Enhancement of training grounds across the country

CHAN and AFCON Preparations

The investment is part of Uganda’s preparations to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2024 and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027. The government has already spent 496.8 billion shillings on Hoima and Akii-Bua stadiums and associated training facilities.

Project Timeline

  • Hoima City Stadium: expected to be completed by December this year
  • Akii-Bua Stadium: projected to be handed over by the end of next year
  • Second phase of Mandela National Stadium renovations: scheduled to begin in October this year

Raising Sports Infrastructure to International Standards

The substantial financial commitment reflects the government’s ambition to raise Uganda’s sports infrastructure to international standards and ensure the country is well-prepared to host major continental tournaments.
