Pressure is mounting at Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club as the Johnnie Walker Uganda Open Golf Championship shifts into its decisive amateur showdown, where the spotlight falls on a field packed with in-form contenders hungry for glory.

The tournament has already delivered drama in the seniors’ and ladies’ categories, both decided by razor-thin margins, and the amateurs are expected to follow the same script of nail-biting finishes.

Leading the chase is a resurgent Joseph Cwinyaai, who has enjoyed a remarkable run of form this season. From his 16-under triumph at the Absa Captains Bell Tournament to back-to-back wins at the Presidents Cup and the Mayombo Memorial Open, the Toro Club ace has established himself as the man to beat.

His consistency has been the cornerstone of his success, and he is now looking to translate that into a second Uganda Open crown.

But the defending champion, Joseph Akena, is not ready to let go of his crown without a fight. With the advantage of playing on his home course and boosted by lessons from recent outings in the US Amateur Championship qualifiers, Akena is preparing for another tightly contested duel with Cwinyaai—echoing last year’s thrilling one-stroke victory.

Their rivalry, already one of the most compelling in Ugandan golf, sets the stage for another classic. Last year, Akena edged Cwinyaai at the Open before the Toro man struck back in December at the Nsubuga Invitational, again separated by just a single shot.

Beyond the headline names, a strong chasing pack promises to complicate the script. Seasoned competitors like Ibrahim Bagalana, Juma Abiti, Joseph Kasozi, and Andrew Ssekibejja bring experience, while youngsters such as Peter Mayende, Ibrahim Ssemakula, and Peter Otukei are eager to spring surprises on familiar turf.

With 72 holes to navigate, and the Lugazi layout known for its tricky stretches, the amateurs’ battle is primed to produce another razor-edge finish—continuing the tournament’s reputation for drama until the final putt drops.
