Uganda made a perfect start to the 2024 East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games, sweeping aside Burundi 4–1 in a thrilling opener played under the lights at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

Super-sub Hon. Denis Ssekabira turned the game into his personal show, coming off the bench to net a remarkable hat trick. Hon. John Lematia added the other for the hosts, while Burundi’s consolation came from Hon. Shabani Nimubona.

But the action on the pitch was only part of a larger spectacle in Kampala.
The Games officially roared to life earlier in the day, ushering in two weeks where sport takes centre stage as a tool for regional unity. This year’s kickoff embraced a renewed sense of symbolism and togetherness. Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa led a colourful opening ceremony before legislators from across the region marched from Parliament to Kololo in a spirited procession an unmistakable declaration that competition and cooperation can stride side by side.

Once again, the Inter-Parliamentary Games demonstrate the EAC’s belief in integration beyond the political chambers. Over the next 14 days, lawmakers will contest a wide array of sports including football, netball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, golf, darts and tug-of-war, effectively transforming Kampala into the heartbeat of East African sports diplomacy.

As hosts, Uganda welcome teams from Kenya, Burundi and South Sudan each delegation eager to compete, connect and strengthen the bonds that define the region.
