Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) has been awarded a permanent trophy by the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) after making history as the first team to win the Pepsi University Football League three times in its 13 years of existence.
The prestigious trophy was handed over during the league’s end-of-season awards gala held today at Kati Kati Restaurant in Lugogo.

It was presented to UMU’s delegation, led by university sports tutor Henry Lutaaya and head coach Eric Kisuze, by Rev. Canon Duncans Mugumya, the Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports at the Ministry of Education and Sports.
UMU, based in Nkozi, Mpigi District, clinched the 2025 title in commanding fashion, defeating St. Lawrence University (SLAU) 3-0 in last month’s final. This third championship victory puts UMU ahead of previous two-time champions Kampala University (KU) and Makerere University Business School (MUBS).

The Nkozi-based side also dominated the individual awards. Team captain Joseph Kayondo earned a hat-trick of accolades—Most Valuable Player (MVP), Best Defender, and a place in the Season’s Best XI. Midfielder Nicholas Jjonga was named Midfielder of the Season and also featured in the Best XI, alongside teammates Patrick Mutebi and striker Ivan Agamire.
Coach Eric Kisuze was recognised as Coach of the Season, having guided UMU through an unbeaten 12-match campaign.

Other notable winners included Gilbert Wanume of Kampala University, who bagged the Golden Boot with five goals. The Golden Glove went to Fred Ochen of Ndejje University, who conceded just two goals and kept seven clean sheets in eight matches.

St Lawrence’s Innocent Matege, who provided four assists, won the award with most Assists. Kumi University’s forward Tom Alele was voted rookie of the season for his consistent attacking threat.
Bugema University’s Faustino Kiwa won the best sports tutor award, edging out UMU’s Henry Lutaaya and SLAU’s Peter Seguya.
