UPDF FC found timely relief away from their Premier League frustrations by advancing in the Uganda Cup, edging Nsambya SC 2-1 in a competitive round of 64 tie played on Thursday at St Peter’s SS Nsambya.

Facing lower-league opposition, the Army side showed a more composed and purposeful display, gradually asserting control in the first half. Their patience paid off in the 33rd minute when Andrew Samson Kigozi broke the deadlock, giving UPDF a deserved advantage at the interval.
Nsambya SC, however, refused to fade quietly and raised their intensity after the restart. Their persistence was rewarded in the 69th minute when experienced midfielder Joseph Nsubuga calmly dispatched a penalty to draw the hosts level and inject fresh belief into the contest.

Just as momentum seemed to be swinging, UPDF responded decisively. A dangerous delivery into the box caused confusion in the Nsambya defence, with Boniface Ekengu inadvertently turning the ball into his own net ten minutes later to restore the visitors’ lead.
UPDF managed the closing stages professionally to seal qualification, joining fellow Uganda Premier League sides Vipers SC, KCCA FC, Mbarara City and Express FC in the round of 32. The victory offers a welcome boost for the Army side as they look to steady their season through a strong cup run.
