Vipers continued with their title chase in the Uganda Premier League after they defeated Wakiso Giants 1-0 on Friday evening at St Mary’s stadium, Kitende.
Striker Kenneth Kimera scored the only Vipers goal in the 55th minute off Frank Katongole’s assist as the Venoms moved to 49 points, five above second placed NEC.
The result saw Wakiso Giants remain 14th on the table, amassing 14 points from 20 matches. Their recent form has been challenging, with no wins in their last seven league outings, comprising four draws and three losses. This has increased their chances of getting relegated.
Vipers will be thankful to the goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza for making several point-blank saves. Rahmat Senfuka and Hudson Mbalire are some of players who got the scoring opportunities that were saved by Mudekereza.
The match had feature familiar faces on both sides. Vipers’ squad included former Wakiso Giants players such as, Grant Matsiko, and Kenneth Kimera. Conversely, Wakiso Giants’ squad boasts former Vipers players like Rahmat Ssenfuka and Tom Masiko, adding an intriguing subplot to the encounter.
Vipers coach John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda also faced his former side in Wakiso.
