Vipers SC tightened their grip on the Uganda Premier League title race after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Maroons FC on Wednesday afternoon in Luzira.

The victory propelled them to 59 points, extending their lead at the top of the table to eight points ahead of second-placed NEC, who have a game in hand against Mbale Heroes on Friday at Lugogo.

The decisive moment came in the 47th minute when star forward Allan Okello converted a penalty after Maroons defender Edward Kabona was penalised for handling the ball in the area. The infringement followed a shot from Abdul Karim Watambala, which struck Kabona’s arm, leaving the referee with little choice.

Maroons, despite trailing, showed resilience and nearly found an equaliser late on when Norman Odipio unleashed a fierce drive in the 88th minute that rattled the crossbar, but Vipers held on to secure a crucial three points.

The goal marked Okello’s 17th of the campaign in just 25 appearances, underlining his remarkable form. Speaking after the match, Okello expressed joy at scoring but stressed that team success remains his primary focus.

“I am happy to have helped the team win such a tough game. Of course, I want to win the Golden Boot, but helping the team win the league is more important, that is my top priority,” Okello told Roramedia.

With just a few games remaining, Vipers are now firmly in the driving seat as they chase their seventh league crown.
