A place in the Stanbic Uganda Cup final will be on the line on Friday evening when rivals Vipers SC and Kitara FC renew their rivalry in the decisive semi-final second leg at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The contest remains delicately balanced after the opening meeting in Butema ended without goals, although Vipers head into the return leg with the advantage of home support and a familiar environment in Kitende.
Kitara will still feel they missed a huge opportunity in the first encounter after dominating large spells and creating numerous chances. However, goalkeeper Derrick Kiggundu produced a standout display to keep the Venoms alive in the tie with a string of important saves.
The first leg was also overshadowed by controversy after Vipers captain Milton Karisa was forced off injured following a dangerous challenge from Jasper Aheebwa, who escaped with only a caution despite strong appeals for a dismissal.
Both clubs now arrive for the showdown carrying inconsistent form. Vipers have stumbled in the Uganda Premier League with consecutive draws against URA and Police, while Kitara suffered defeats to NEC and Express.
The recent dip in results has intensified pressure on Vipers coach Jacky Ivan Minnaert, especially with the club’s lead at the top of the league table narrowing. Failure to reach the cup final would further increase scrutiny on the title contenders.
For Kitara coach George Lutalo, progression to the final could salvage a campaign that risks ending without silverware despite significant investment in the squad by club president Deo Kasozi.
Vipers are sweating over the fitness of Milton Karisa and Enock Luyima, while midfielder Taddeo Lwanga will miss out through suspension after accumulating bookings. Derrick Kiggundu, who was rested against Police, is expected to reclaim his place in goal.
On the other hand, Lutalo appeared to keep several key players fresh during the defeat to Express. Muhammad Shaban, Frank Tumwesigye, Murushid Jjuuko, Henry Musisi and George Ssenkaaba were all left out entirely, while Yunus Sibira and Jimmy Kalema started from the bench.
Kitara have also been boosted by the return of Meddie Kibirige, who is back available after serving suspension in the league.
