Namuwongo Blazers wrapped up their regular season campaign in the National Basketball League (NBL) in emphatic style, recording an 83-74 triumph over defending champions City Oilers at a packed Lugogo Indoor Arena on Friday night.

The result saw the Blazers complete a season double over the Oilers, underlining their dominance and consistency this season. With the victory, the Blazers solidified their position at the summit of the league standings, finishing the regular season with a remarkable 19 wins out of 22 games, and just three defeats.

Blazers Set the Tone Early

From the opening tip-off, the Blazers showed clear intent. Innocent Ochera capped a high-energy first quarter with a confident layup, giving Namuwongo a 25-16 lead at the end of the first ten minutes. Their defensive coordination and transition play left the Oilers scrambling to keep up.

City Oilers, however, didn’t go down without a fight. Led by their fluid ball movement and improved offensive rhythm, they clawed their way back into the game. Despite their efforts, they still trailed by five points (47-42) at halftime.

Oilers Rally but Blazers Stay Composed

Early in the third quarter, the reigning champions found a spark. Fayed Bale electrified the arena with back-to-back three-pointers, pulling the score level at 50-50, sending the Oilers’ fans into a frenzy.

The tension remained high throughout the quarter, with both teams trading baskets. A crucial jump shot by Benjamin Kawumi brought the Oilers within touching distance as they headed into the final quarter trailing narrowly at 60-59.

Blazers Pull Away in Crunch Time

In the final minutes, the Blazers showcased their composure and depth. With 1:23 left on the clock, Tonny Drileba delivered the dagger—a clutch three-pointer that stretched the Blazers’ lead to 79-70, effectively putting the game out of reach for the Oilers.

Although the Oilers tried to mount a late comeback, the Blazers remained sharp on both ends and closed out the game professionally to claim a well-earned nine-point victory.

Balanced Offense Powers the Win

Namuwongo’s scoring was evenly distributed, with Joel Lukoji leading the way with 17 points, followed closely by Anthony Chukwuba (14), Moses Mugisha (13), and Peter Obleng (11). Their balanced offensive production and disciplined team play proved too much for the Oilers to overcome.

Statement of Intent

This latest win not only marks a clean sweep over the Oilers this season but also sends a strong message to the rest of the league as the postseason approaches. The Blazers look poised for a serious title challenge, armed with depth, experience, and growing confidence.

As the playoffs loom, the Blazers will be the team to beat, while the Oilers, unaccustomed to playing catch-up, will have to regroup quickly if they hope to reclaim their crown.
