The City Oilers wrapped their struggles in the first round of the 2025 National Basketball League with a 79-62 loss to the UCU Canons on Friday night at YMCA Court in Wandegeya.
The game began evenly, with both teams locked at 16-16 after the first quarter. However, UCU gradually seized control, heading into halftime with a 34-29 advantage and maintaining the upper hand throughout the remainder of the game.
The Oilers were their own worst enemy, committing 22 turnovers and shooting a dismal 8-of-36 from beyond the arc. Ben Komakech led their scoring with 17 points, while Edgar Munaaba chipped in with 13. No other player reached double digits, with Fayed Baale limited to just six points in an unusually quiet outing.
In contrast, UCU displayed composure and efficiency. Joel Kayiira starred with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. He received strong support from Flore Dushime and Alier Perch, who added 13 and 12 points respectively.
The defeat marked the Oilers’ sixth loss in 11 games — an alarming return for the 10-time champions. Their losses this season have come at the hands of Nam Blazers, JT Jaguars, KCCA Panthers, JKL Dolphins, Kampala Rockets, and now UCU Canons — a clear reflection of the league’s growing competitiveness.
With the win, UCU improved to a 6-4 record and will aim to close out the first round strongly when they face JT Jaguars next Wednesday.
