The Uganda Cubs are gearing up for the CAF U17 AFCON CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers this weekend, with coach Brian Ssenyondo determined to address past challenges, like the lack of a clinical striking force that cost them qualification in 2022.

In that year, the Cubs struggled to convert chances, an issue Ssenyondo has focused on during the team’s build-up matches. The emphasis on improving finishing has already paid off, with the team scoring over ten goals in recent preparatory games. Players like striker James Bogere has made this happen, and will be pivotal to the Cubs’ success.

“To win a game, you have to score goals, and that’s why we have put a lot of emphasis on that area. But it’s not the only department we’ve focused on. We’ve also worked on strengthening our defense, especially with the advantage of playing at home,” Ssenyondo expressed.

“However we should have a collective effort. If the strikers don’t score and you have the opportunity as a midfielder or defender, we take it. The bottom line is to ensure that the team performs well,” he added.

The Qualifiers will begin on Saturday, but notable changes have affected the tournament’s structure. Ethiopia and Burundi have withdrawn from Group A due to financial challenges and player eligibility issues, respectively, leaving only hosts Uganda and Tanzania in the group. Meanwhile, Group B remains intact with Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Kenya of which one will be moved to group A according to CAF.

The tournament, scheduled to run from December 14th to 28th, will be hosted at Hamz Nakivubo Stadium and St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende. The top two teams will be earning qualification for the CAF U17 AFCON.
