East African football has officially cemented its place on the global stage! Kenya’s Junior Starlets have done it again, producing a tactical masterclass at the Nyayo National Stadium to dismantle South Africa (W) U17 3-1, cruising through with a resounding 5-1 aggregate victory.
With this triumph, the Starlets have booked their ticket to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Crucially for regional football history, this marks the second consecutive time the Kenyan youngsters have qualified for the global showpiece, proving that their historic debut tournament run was no fluke—they are officially a continental powerhouse.

The task wasn’t straightforward. South Africa came out firing and shocked the home crowd just 3 minutes in when Katleho Melabana found the back of the net to give the visitors an early lead.
However, showing the elite resilience that defined their previous qualification campaign, Kenya adjusted brilliantly after the interval. The introduction of impactful substitutes flipped the game entirely on its head.
The tactical shift paid massive dividends in the 67th minute when Gaudancia Maloba struck the equalizer, sending the Nyayo crowd into absolute raptures. The game turned into a high-octane battle, with Maloba putting everything on the line before receiving a second caution in the 77th minute.

With the aggregate score resting at 4-1 but South Africa desperately hunting for a lifeline, the definitive moment arrived in the 80th minute. Kenya was awarded a crucial penalty, and step up Brenda Awuor.
With the weight of the region on her shoulders, Brenda Awuor showed absolute ice in her veins. She stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty home to make it 2-1 on the day, effectively breaking South African hearts and putting the tie entirely out of reach.
Just two minutes later, Elizabeth Alizeba put the icing on the cake, firing home a late goal to finalize a dominant 3-1 victory on the day.

Wnning 5-1 on aggregate against a heavyweight like South Africa sends a massive statement across the globe.
For Uganda and the broader East African community, watching the Junior Starlets secure back-to-back World Cup berths is immense motivation for the growth of the regional women’s game.
The world is officially on notice. The Junior Starlets are going back to the big stage, and the whole of East Africa will be cheering them on!
