The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has named Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso as the technical heads for the Uganda Cranes squad that will feature in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to kick off from August 2 to 30, 2025.

The homegrown coaching pair will take charge of the local-based national team in the regional showcase, which will be staged across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania under the unified “Pamoja East Africa” hosting banner.

While Muhumuza and Byekwaso will be on the touchline, their work will fall under the strategic direction of Uganda Cranes Head Coach Paul Put, who remains in charge of the national team’s overarching tactical philosophy and tournament preparedness.

This is not the first time the duo has teamed up Muhumuza and Byekwaso briefly took interim control of the senior Cranes side during international friendlies against Zambia and Mali in October 2023, following the exit of Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic.

Byekwaso, in particular, brings a decorated track record with youth teams, having guided the Uganda Hippos to a runners-up finish at the 2021 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and most recently clinching silver at the 2024 African Games.

As anticipation builds, FUFA has confirmed that further appointments to the technical team will be communicated ahead of the final squad announcement.

CHAN, a tournament reserved exclusively for players featuring in their national domestic leagues, presents an opportunity for local talents to shine on a continental stage—and Uganda is keen to make a lasting impression under this experienced leadership.
