For decades, the FIFA World Cup has remained an unfinished chapter for Côte d’Ivoire. The Elephants have produced golden generations, graced the global stage and thrilled fans with their talent, yet a place in the knockout rounds has always remained out of reach.

That could finally change on Wednesday when Emerse Fae’s side face Curaçao at Philadelphia Stadium knowing that a positive result will secure a place in the Round of 32 and rewrite a long-standing piece of their football history.

The Ivorians enter the contest with three points after edging Ecuador 1-0 before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Germany despite leading for much of the match. Those performances have reinforced the belief that the African champions possess both the quality and resilience needed to take the next step.

Attention will once again turn to attacking stars such as Amad Diallo, while Yan Diamonde is expected to retain his place after impressing on the left flank. At the back, Roma defender Evan N’Dicka is available after recovering full fitness, though Wilfried Singo’s injury could open the door for Guela Doue to start at right-back.

Standing in their way is a Curaçao side desperate to end its campaign on a high. While considered underdogs in the group, the Caribbean nation has shown flashes of quality and will be eager to spoil the Elephants’ historic ambitions.

Elsewhere in the group, already-qualified Germany take on Ecuador in a match that could still have significant implications. Ecuador must secure victory and hope Côte d’Ivoire stumble if they are to keep their knockout hopes alive.

For the Elephants, however, the equation is simple. One more strong performance could deliver what previous generations could not — a first-ever place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
