Makerere University finally got their UFL campaign on track with a gritty 1-0 triumph over Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) at Makerere Arena on Tuesday.

The game-changing moment came in the 57th minute when Isaac Byaruhanga rose above the defence to nod in a perfectly delivered corner from Ian Kajubi. The goal proved decisive in a tightly contested clash that showcased Makerere’s resilience and tactical growth.

IUIU started strongly, testing Makerere goalkeeper Timothy Kaziba with several early opportunities from Calvin Otim, Shafik Kawooya, and Ronald Mulengeti. However, their finishing let them down, and Kaziba’s alert saves kept the hosts in the match.

The second half saw Makerere assert themselves, controlling the midfield and gradually turning pressure into attacking intent. Byaruhanga’s towering header was the reward for their persistence. Even as IUIU pushed for an equalizer in the closing minutes, Makerere’s defence, marshaled by Kaziba, held firm.

The win boosts Makerere to three points in Group E, giving them momentum after a sluggish start, while IUIU endured their first setback following a 3-0 opening victory over King Ceasor University.
