Mbarara City v NEC

After a slow start to their StarTimes Uganda Premier League campaign, NEC FC will face Mbarara City FC at the Rwamwanja Stadium in Kamwenge, hoping to finally ignite their season with a first win.

Three games in, NEC have only managed two points — a return that hardly reflects the quality within their squad. The focus now shifts to turning possession and promise into points as they aim to rediscover the spark that made them one of the league’s most competitive sides last season.

But the fixture carries an added edge — NEC’s dominance in this duel is well-documented. The Kampala-based side have never lost to Mbarara City, winning four and drawing two of their previous six meetings. In those four league victories, they have conceded just once, including last season’s 2-1 away triumph in April.

Still, history won’t win today’s match. Mbarara City, despite a stuttering start of two draws and two defeats, are a team desperate for revival. With their traditional home at Kakyeka unavailable, they have turned Rwamwanja Stadium into a temporary fortress — and Coach James Odoch believes it could be the perfect place to change their fortunes.

“The players have been sharp and focused in training. The energy is good, and I believe we’ll show the right character to fight for all three points,” Odoch said.

For NEC, the pressure is equally real, another slip could dent confidence early in the season.

A victory in Kamwenge would not only lift NEC up the table but also reaffirm their status as one of the league’s dark horses — and perhaps, kickstart a campaign that’s yet to find its rhythm.
