The third round of the Rugby Uganda Cup gets underway today with high-stakes fixtures and plenty of subplots across the country as some of Uganda’s finest clubs look to edge closer to silverware.

At Legends Grounds, a familiar rivalry reignites when KCB KOBs welcome the Toyota Buffaloes. Their last 15s meeting ended in heartbreak for the Buffaloes, with Joseph Aredo’s decisive kick sealing victory for the KOBs in a tense Nile Special Rugby Championship playoff. This time, both sides arrive in strong form — KOBs demolishing Fort Portal Tyrants 102-3, while Buffaloes eased past Kakiira Simbas 17-0. Saturday’s clash could hinge not on skill, but on desire and composure.

Meanwhile, in Jinja, the Jinja Hippos — runners-up in last season’s Rugby Championship — prepare for a fierce test against the Rhinos. Both teams have shown grit and structure this season, making this tie one of the weekend’s most unpredictable. The battle could be decided by discipline at the breakdown and sharp execution in open play.

Over in Makerere, emotions will run high as the Rams host the Mongers in what promises to be an emotionally charged contest. The Entebbe-based side will take to the field still mourning Ronald Adigasi, one of their founding members and a beloved coach, who will be laid to rest this weekend. Expect the Mongers to channel that emotion into a spirited performance in honour of their fallen mentor.

At Kings Park, the Pirates return home looking to entertain their fans against Walukuba. Though the Pirates haven’t needed to hit full throttle so far, their growing confidence after recent success in the 7s circuit suggests they’ll want to send a message. Walukuba, who failed to honour their previous fixture against the Silverbacks, will be desperate to restore pride against a top opponent.

The round wraps up at Kyadondo, where the Heathens square off with the Victoria Sharks in a derby between groundmates. The Sharks, still reeling from a narrow loss to Impis, will face a stern test against a Heathens side eager to impose dominance on familiar turf.

With history, emotion, and championship intent all colliding this weekend, Round Three of the Uganda Cup promises to deliver not just tries — but stories.
