Netball Super League Pushes Forward as Clubs Navigate Player Shortages

The National Netball Super League enters one of its most complicated phases of the season as clubs prepare to continue their campaigns without a dozen of the country’s best players all away on national duty at the Celtic International Netball Cup in Scotland. Yet despite the strain, league action will carry on, forcing top teams to improvise, reshuffle and survive until their stars return.

With a crowded sports calendar ahead including the Africa Netball Championship (Dec 8–13) and the AUUS Games (Dec 18–23) Netball Uganda and league organisers have agreed there is simply no window to halt or delay fixtures. Instead, teams will rely on depth, adaptability, and youthful stand-ins to keep the title race alive.

KCCA Forced to Balance Leadership and Losses

Table leaders KCCA (37 points) are among the hardest hit, missing four key She Cranes players. Still, they will rejoin the action on December 3 against Weyonje, shortly before heading out for the Africa Netball Cup in Namibia. Their return fixture a potential title decider against Prisons on December 17 will come right after the international commitments.

Out on national duty are shooter Shadia Nassanga, defenders Shaffie Nalwanja, Christine Nakitto, and mid-court star Margaret Baagala.

NIC Counting on Squad Depth

Second-placed NIC (35 points) must wade through their fixture list without five of their regular starters. They face Posta this weekend with a reduced squad, then return to full strength for crucial matches against UCU (Dec 3) and Weyonje (Dec 17) once their internationals are back.

Their missing players form the spine of the team: Baagala, Namulema, Nassaka, Ayaa, and Nanyonga — an entire playmaking and defensive chain currently wearing national colours.

Prisons Keep Moving Despite Gaps

Prisons, in third place on 33 points, have chosen to continue without hesitation despite losing Lilian Ajio and Malisera Akello to She Cranes duty. They take on Luweero this Saturday before shifting focus to their massive December 17 showdown with KCCA — a clash expected to shape this year’s championship complexion.

Teams Left to Make the Tough Choice

Under Netball Uganda’s revised rules, clubs missing three or more players for Uganda duty can either request postponements or soldier on with whoever is available. This season, however, the congested calendar has left little room for delays, compelling most teams to adjust on the fly.
