After nearly two years of dormancy, the Netball Super League makes its much anticipated return today, Saturday at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with a blockbuster clash between Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and National Insurance Corporation (NIC) head lining the opening fixtures.
This high profile showdown rekindles a fierce rivalry, with both sides fielding star studded line ups brimming with national team talent.
NIC’s roster includes stalwarts such as Margaret Baagala, Gloria Aya, Racheal Nanyonga, Nassim Muteesi, Penelope Amiya, and Privas Kayeny. KCCA counters with big names like Shadia Nassanga, Christine Nakitto, and national captain Irene Eyaru.
The tension between the two sides dates back to the 2021 league season, where KCCA was the only team to deny NIC maximum points, holding them to two draws in a campaign otherwise dominated by the latter.
NIC coach Rashid Mubiru has promised to compete well.
“We want to perform well since our target is to win the championship. We know our opponents are good team but we are ready to compete,” noted Mubiru.
Saturday’s fixture also serves as a rematch of the recent National Netball Rally Championship final, where NIC triumphed 21-15. KCCA will be eager to revenge that defeat and prove they’ve learned from the experience.
However Coach Fred Mugerwa believes that they are ready to live up to task.
“We are ready to put up a strong fight in what promises to be a fiery encounter to mark the league’s return,” noted Mugerwa.
