Patricia Kawuma and Shafic Muhebwa Shine Brightest at 2nd edition of TECH for the World Chess Championships

The 2nd edition of TECH for the World Chess Championships concluded with notable performance in both men’s Secondary Open and Women’s categories.

The three-day tournament at Sports Outreach Ministry Resource Center in Kiwawu, Mityana attracted a total of 158 talented young minds participated in this year’s edition from different SOM Inter Project Chess Academy centers countrywide including Bwaise, Kibuli, Katwe, Kampala, Gulu, Jinja, Kagadi, Masaka, Hoima and Budaka embarked on a life-changing journey.

The closing ceremony was graced by Engineer Karl Reese who is the owner of TECH for the World and work with Microsoft from America.

TECH for the World awarded over 30 winners participants in this year’s edition. Winner in each category won a one year school fees, 1st runners up (Two terms school fees), 2nd runners up (one term school fees) and other juicy prize at stake include Books, certificates and cash.

“I strongly believe in a long term commitment support towards Som Chess academy and it’s has been marked by monumental achievements from Building grassroots talent,” Karl Reese stated.

Patricia Kawuma demonstrated his prowess, clinching the secondary women championship after securing eight points from eight games.

“I have been actively participating in tournaments leading up to this championship, allowing me to implement various strategies that ultimately led to this victory. This win not only signifies personal growth but also validates the effort of my coaches,” Patricia stated.

Meanwhile, Shafic Muhebwa defended the the overall winner in the boy’s secondary category with six and half points.

“Depesite losing the second round I bounced back stronger and it’s has been a highly competitive championship but I thank God for the triumph,” Shafic stated.

Robert Katende the proprietor of SOM Inter Chess Academy, expressed satisfaction with the success of the tournament’s 2nd edition.

“Thanks you our partners, friends, and well wishers for your continued support towards this work of restoring hope and transforming lives through chess, one move at a time, since 2004,” he stated.

However, despite the financial strains, it has been a success much as we didn’t afford to bring the number of participants we wanted,” Katende stated.
