Kampala Queens FC showed their championship character on Saturday, overturning a slow start to secure a thrilling 2–1 victory over Makerere University WFC at the MTN Omondi Stadium — their first win of the new FUFA Women Super League season.

For much of the game, it looked like the champions were headed for another frustrating outing after Josephine Ndagire’s early header had put the visitors ahead inside three minutes. But the Queens rallied back through a spirited second-half performance that underlined why they remain the team to beat in Ugandan women’s football.

Head coach Firew Asefa’s decision to introduce Joanita Ainembabazi before halftime changed the rhythm of the match. Her energy and movement gave the hosts renewed purpose, and just four minutes after the restart, she rose high to nod home the equaliser, breathing life into the champions’ comeback hopes.

Kampala Queens dominated possession from that moment, with midfielders Catherine Nagadya and Ainembabazi dictating play, yet Makerere’s defensive discipline kept the scores level heading into stoppage time.

But when the decisive moment came, it was born of raw determination. Pacy winger Kamiyat Naigaga powered down the right flank, shrugged off her marker, and smashed home a stunning winner past goalkeeper Grace Nassande to spark wild celebrations among the home fans.

Naigaga’s match-winning strike — her first of the season — earned her the Finance Trust Bank Woman of the Match award and lifted Kampala Queens to four points from two games.

For Makerere, it was another night of heartbreak after a bright start. The students remain on one point and will need to rediscover their cutting edge to climb the table.

Elsewhere, Kawempe Muslim Ladies turned on the style in Soroti, coming from behind to beat Olila High School FC 3–1. Goals from Shadia Nabirye, Agnes Nabukenya, and Latifa Nakasi ensured Kawempe’s first away win at Olila in three seasons — a statement of intent from the four-time champions.

At Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium, Rines SS WFC were held to a goalless draw by Asubo Gafford Ladies FC, despite a late penalty miss from Nakato Nakyanzi. The standout performer, however, was youngster Dorcus Edith Nantaba, who impressed on her first senior start and deservedly claimed the Finance Trust Bank Woman of the Match accolade.
