St Lawrence University has booked a spot in this season’s University Football League final after edging Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) 1-0 in the second leg of the semi finals played this evening in Kavule, Katende along Masaka Road.

Osman Arafat Kembo was the hero of the day, scoring the decisive goal in the 24th minute to seal a 2-1 aggregate victory for St Lawrence. The first leg in Mbale had ended 1-1, setting up a tense return leg where both sides had everything to play for.

Despite creating more chances, St Lawrence couldn’t stretch the lead further, and IUIU struggled to penetrate a resilient backline.

This marks St Lawrence’s third appearance in the final in the last four editions of the tournament. However, they’ll be hoping for better fortunes this time, having lost their previous two final appearances 2-0 to Uganda Christian University in 2019 and 1-0 to Uganda Martyrs in 2022.

Their opponents in the final will be decided next week, when Uganda Martyrs University visits Bugema University for the return leg of their semi final clash. Martyrs carry a healthy 2-0 advantage from the first leg played in Nkozi, despite missing key players.

The final is expected later this month, and all eyes will be on whether St Lawrence can finally lift the elusive title or suffer heartbreak once again.
