UEFA Slams FIFA Over Decision to Lift Balogun Suspension

UEFA has strongly criticized FIFA over its decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban imposed on Folarin Balogun following his red card, describing the move as a serious threat to the integrity of the game.

In a strongly worded statement, UEFA said FIFA had undermined one of football’s fundamental principles by making an exception to a rule that is clearly established in the sport’s regulations.

The European governing body argued that the automatic suspension following a red card is mandatory and should never be open to interpretation or altered during an ongoing tournament.

“A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted. It is a principle embedded in regulations, which cannot be made subject to exceptions, let alone in the middle of a tournament where several other players have been in the same situation and regularly served their suspension.”

UEFA warned that relaxing such a rule risks damaging confidence in the competition by creating uncertainty over the consistent application of football’s laws.

“When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined.”

The organization also expressed concern that FIFA’s ruling could establish a precedent, forcing tournament organizers to apply similar exceptions in future disciplinary cases.

“Such decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament, where similar situations will now require equal treatment, to the detriment of the competition.”

UEFA stressed that football’s universal appeal is built on the equal application of its rules across every competition, adding that decisions taken at the World Cup carry consequences far beyond a single tournament.

“Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws.”

Concluding its statement, UEFA expressed disbelief at FIFA’s decision, saying it was unprecedented and impossible to justify.

“We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”

The statement marks one of UEFA’s strongest public rebukes of FIFA in recent years, highlighting growing concern over the handling of disciplinary matters at the World Cup.
