Uganda, through Dr. Bernard Patrick Ogwel, General Secretary of the National Council of Sports (NCS), took a leading role at the African Union (AU) workshop on sustainable sports development, held over two days in Djibouti. The forum brought together Directors of Sports from 24 AU member states within the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Development Region 4 to discuss strategies for advancing sports across the continent.

As AUSC Advisory Chair, Dr. Ogwel presented the council’s 2024–2028 strategic plan, highlighting the importance of strengthening sports governance, promoting athletics as a tool for social cohesion, and leveraging sport as a driver of sustainable development in Africa.

Dr. Ogwel’s remarks resonated with Uganda’s recent achievements in the sports arena. The country successfully co-hosted the CHAN tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania, reinforcing its capacity to manage continental events. Beyond football, Uganda has launched an ambitious infrastructure development initiative, aimed at nurturing domestic talent and attracting major sporting competitions from across Africa.

The workshop, officially opened by Djibouti’s Secretary of State for Sports, Hassan Mohamed Kamil, was hailed by AU Sports Secretary-General Khadija Ibrahim Idriss as a key milestone in uniting member states and promoting sustainable sports development throughout the continent.

Through active participation in forums like this, Uganda continues to position itself as a regional leader in sports policy, infrastructure, and talent cultivation, while strengthening partnerships across Africa.
