The Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s’ dream of defending their Rugby Africa 7s title has come to an end after a turbulent campaign in Mauritius.

Despite being the defending champions and four-time winners, Uganda’s campaign was marked by tactical gaps and transitional growing pains.

A Disappointing Weekend

Uganda’s journey began with a stunning 17-7 defeat to Ghana, followed by losses to Kenya (12-5) and South Africa (26-0).

Although they bounced back with wins against Ghana (47-7) and Zambia (24-5), it was too little, too late. Madagascar ultimately capitalized on their form and discipline to book a place in the World Rugby Series Division 3.

A New Era Beckons

The campaign may be remembered as the beginning of a generational shift in the team. Several long-serving players, including Dennis Etwau, Norbert Okeny, and Alex Aturinda, may be nearing their final acts in the sevens setup. However, this opens up opportunities for younger players like Karim Arinaitwe, Aaron Tukei, and Roy Kizito to step forward.

Bright Spots

Malcom Okello was a bright spot for Uganda, finishing as the tournament’s top point scorer with 41 points. His performance hints at his growing stature in the team.

Road Ahead

The coaching staff and Uganda Rugby Union face a critical few months ahead. The Safari 7s in October presents a perfect litmus test for the new-look squad and a valuable chance to rebuild team chemistry, strategy, and leadership depth. With fresh blood waiting in the wings and institutional support behind them, the Cranes have a chance to reforge their identity.

Results:

  • Uganda 07-17 Ghana
  • Uganda 43-00 Ivory Coast
  • Uganda 05-12 Kenya
  • Uganda 00-26 South Africa
  • Uganda 47-07 Ghana
  • Uganda 24-05 Zambia

The Mauritius tournament may not have gone to plan, but it just might have been the shake-up the Rugby Cranes needed. A new chapter begins – written not in trophies, but in transformation.
