In an unforgettable display of courage and determination, Uganda’s Under-15 girls’ table tennis team clinched gold at the 2025 ITTF African Youth Championships, overcoming Tunisia 3-2 in a gripping final showdown at the Sir Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall.

Uganda’s path to the title was anything but straightforward, with momentum swinging wildly throughout the five-match thriller. The East African side had to dig deep and call on every ounce of belief, composure, and resilience to emerge victorious on the continental stage.

Early Setbacks, Quick Recovery
The final began with Uganda on the back foot, as Patience Anyango lost the opening match in straight sets to Tunisia’s Saidi Ella, giving the North Africans an early lead. But Jemimah Nakawala quickly steadied Uganda’s ship in the second match, battling past Brahimi Mariam in a marathon five-set encounter, sealing her win with an emphatic 11-6 finish to level the score 1-1.

Tunisia regained the upper hand in the third match, where Patra Nasirumbi was outplayed 3-1 by Brahimi Nour, pushing Uganda into a must-win situation once more.

Nakawala then returned to the table, this time for a rematch with Ella. The two traded sets in a tightly contested duel, but Nakawala, full of grit and tactical sharpness, pulled away in the final game with a commanding 11-7 win — once again tying the team score at 2-2.

Redemption and Glory
With gold on the line, it came down to a decisive final match between Anyango and Mariam a rematch from the group stage that had gone Tunisia’s way. But this time, Anyango was mentally locked in. She took an early lead, survived a dip in the fourth set, and held her nerve in a nail-biting decider, sealing the match 3-2 with an 11-9 victory that sent Uganda’s bench into raptures.

A Championship of Firsts
This win marked Uganda’s third gold medal at the event, following individual triumphs by Joseph Sebatindira and Patience Anyango earlier during the Africa Hopes Week and Challenge. More importantly, it secured Uganda a coveted spot at the 2025 World Youth Championships in Romania later this year a major step forward for the team on the global stage.

The Semifinal Comeback That Defined the Journey
Before reaching the final, Uganda pulled off one of the tournament’s most dramatic comebacks, turning a 2-0 deficit into a stunning 3-2 victory over tournament favourites Algeria in the semifinals.

After back-to-back losses by Anyango and Nakawala to the Morice sisters (Tania and Jade), Uganda’s hopes hung by a thread. But Nasirumbi flipped the script with a gutsy 3-2 win against Tazerouti Amani, sparking life into the team. Nakawala followed with a clinical sweep of Tania, and Anyango completed the turnaround in style, edging Jade in five sets to book Uganda’s place in the final.

All Eyes on the Singles Battles
With the team competitions concluded, attention now turns to the Under-15 singles contests, kicking off Wednesday, July 30. Star paddler Joseph Sebatindira headlines Uganda’s hopes, opening his group-stage campaign in Group 1 against Ndzelen Maxwell (Cameroon), Scholtz Ruan (South Africa), and Joseph Victor (Nigeria).
