The newly-launched “Who is Who” Table Tennis Championship turned the KQ Sports Complex in Kanyanya into a battleground of flair, focus, and fierce determination, as some of Uganda’s finest paddlers squared off in a high-energy tournament that could mark a turning point in the sport’s local profile.
Rising above a field packed with promise and pedigree, Acuma Benji Ebenezer and Amina Lukaaya claimed the top honours in the men’s and women’s singles categories, respectively. Their performances not only thrilled the crowd but also underlined the growing depth of talent in Uganda’s table tennis scene.
In the men’s final, Benji faced off against youthful sensation Sokiri Ayela, the teenage standout from Seroma Christian High School. Despite Ayela’s dynamic form and growing fanbase, it was Benji’s cool-headed execution and sharp positional play that carried the day. He cruised to a 3-0 win, putting on a masterclass in control and precision.
The women’s final delivered a different kind of spectacle, a gripping five-set duel between the experienced Lukaaya and fast-rising Ivy Nekesa. Momentum swung wildly throughout, but Lukaaya’s composure in the deciding moments proved decisive, clinching a hard-fought 3-2 victory that was met with a standing ovation.
One of the tournament’s standout features was its inclusive prize structure a first for many local events with cash rewards extending as far back as the round of 16. This move was widely praised for encouraging participation across the board and raising the competitive bar.
Speaking at the close of the event, Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) President Cyrus Mark Muwanga hailed the championship’s successful debut.
“This is more than a tournament, it’s a new era. The ‘Who is Who’ will now be staged every two months, giving our athletes consistent, high-quality platforms to grow and shine,” Muwanga declared.
The event was graced by several notable figures in Ugandan table tennis, including UTTA General Secretary Joseph Ronald Rukundo, Technical Director Sserulyo Ronnie, and former UTTA President Mulinda Francis, all of whom applauded the competition’s organization and potential impact.
With its strong turnout, professional execution, and compelling matches, the first edition of “Who is Who” has firmly planted its flag as a landmark addition to Uganda’s sports calendar promising bigger crowds, bolder talent, and even greater rivalries in the months ahead.
