In what can only be described as a monumental collapse, UPDF FC threw away a hard-fought 1-0 lead in the dying minutes against KCCA FC yesterday in Bombo, gifting the Kasasiro Boys a 2-1 victory and handing the initiative back to Vipers SC in the Uganda Premier League title race.

For 87 minutes, the Army side had executed a near-perfect game plan. They frustrated the 13-time league champions, defended resolutely, and looked set to deliver a crushing blow to KCCA’s title ambitions. Emmanuel Ochen’s first-half strike, capitalizing on a careless defensive lapse, had put the hosts in a commanding position. A win would have seen them play the role of kingmakers, effectively handing Vipers the league crown.

Instead, UPDF collapsed under minimal pressure in a catastrophic final three minutes that exposed a lack of composure and game management.

The unraveling began in the 87th minute. KCCA, desperate and out of ideas, resorted to a short corner routine. Left-back Herbert Achai’s cross should have been dealt with easily, but UPDF’s defense switched off completely, allowing substitute Emmanuel Anyama to rise unchallenged and head home from close range. Goalkeeper Shamulan Kamya, previously reliable, was left flat-footed.

Worse was to come just two minutes later. A routine cross from midfielder Joel Sserunjogi should have been a routine claim for Kamya. Instead, the goalkeeper inexplicably missed the ball entirely, presenting it on a silver platter to Angolan forward Etienne Katenga, who could hardly believe his luck as he controlled and fired into an empty net in the 89th minute.

From heroes who had one hand on a statement victory, UPDF players were left sprawled on the turf in disbelief, having snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. The travelling KCCA fans celebrated wildly, but the afternoon belonged to the hosts’ spectacular implosion rather than the visitors’ brilliance.

The result means UPDF remain stranded in mid-table obscurity, while KCCA capitalize on the gift to move to 58 points, just three behind leaders Vipers. For most of the evening, Vipers appeared set to secure an eighth league crown without kicking a ball. Instead, Ivan Minnaert’s men, winless in three straight matches following a goalless draw with Police FC, must now feel a sense of disbelief that their rivals were handed a lifeline by UPDF’s mental fragility.

KCCA must still win their remaining two games, but they go into the final rounds knowing that the title race is alive not because of their own heroics, but because UPDF failed to do the simplest job: hold onto what they had.
