Vipers SC return to Lugogo tonight not just in search of three points, but to remind the league that the champions are nowhere near surrendering their crown. With the season still settling into rhythm after their late start, the Kitende side arrives at Omondi Stadium with momentum, confidence and a statement to reinforce.

The Venoms may be sitting fourth on the log, but the table hardly tells the full story. Having played only six matches three fewer than most contenders Vipers’ 16-point tally puts them within touching distance of the summit. Their most recent outing, a ruthless 5–1 dismantling of UPDF, sent a loud warning to those above them. On that night, Gusto Mulongo’s double and goals from Milton Karisa, Moses Waiswa and Robin Kane showcased exactly why they remain the league’s most dangerous proposition when everything clicks.

Head coach Ivan Minnaert insists his side is only beginning to find its rhythm. The Belgian, buoyed by a squad blessed with depth and competition for places, says internal standards are driving their push more than anything happening elsewhere.

“With the way the group is responding, you feel the hunger,” Minnaert noted after Tuesday’s win. “We’re building towards full sharpness, and every match brings us closer to where we want to be.”

While Vipers tighten their grip on form, tonight’s hosts NEC FC are navigating a period of transition. Newly handed over to Badru Kaddu after Hussein Mbalangu’s exit, the Bugolobi-based side is still trying to regain last season’s steel. Kaddu has collected five points from his first four games, but consistency remains elusive. They sit ninth on 10 points and were held to a 1–1 stalemate by Maroons in their latest match.

And yet, NEC know this fixture well. They pushed Vipers all the way in last season’s title race, eventually finishing second after both sides produced identical 3–1 wins at home in their head-to-head encounters. If there is a team capable of unsettling the champions on their day, it is NEC.

The match also carries a narrative of reunions. Paul Mucureezi, Siraje Sentamu and Cromwell Rwothomio now key pillars at NEC face the club where they once thrived, while former NEC midfielder Enock Ssebaggala has quickly become an important cog in Minnaert’s setup at Kitende.

With Vipers eager to compress the gap at the top and NEC determined to spark their season into life, tonight’s floodlit showdown promises more than just points—it promises intent, identity and a battle between two sides with unfinished business.
