Kampala University will be left ruing missed opportunity after being held to a goalless draw by a resilient YMCA Comprehensive Institute in the first leg of the Pepsi University Football League semifinal at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba.

Backed by home support and experience at this stage, KU were expected to take control of the tie, but found themselves repeatedly frustrated by a well-drilled and composed YMCA side that showed little sign of nerves despite their underdog status.

The hosts struggled to break down a compact defensive setup, with their clearest opportunity arriving in the first half when Mark Ebong’s powerful strike forced a sharp save from goalkeeper Kelvin Ssenabulya, who was quick to deny any follow-up danger.

For long spells, the game lacked attacking fluidity, with both teams locked in a cautious midfield battle that limited chances on either end. KU attempted to raise the tempo after the break, pushing numbers forward in search of a breakthrough, but YMCA’s disciplined backline, led by captain Ratib Ramadan, held firm under pressure.

The visitors’ approach was calculated and effective, ensuring they left Kampala with the tie finely balanced heading into the return leg on home soil.

KU head coach Vincent Tumusiime admitted his side fell short of expectations but remains confident of turning things around in Buwambo, insisting the contest is far from over.

The match, however, ended on a concerning note after a late collision between Gilbert Wanume and Jude Asiku forced both players off the pitch for medical attention before being taken to hospital.

With everything still to play for, focus now shifts to Buwambo, where YMCA will look to build on their defensive resilience while KU chase a decisive response in the second leg.
