What once appeared to be a smooth march toward a domestic double has suddenly turned into a nervy finish for Vipers SC as they prepare for a decisive Uganda Premier League encounter against Maroons FC at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.
The defending champions enter the match under mounting pressure following a worrying dip in form that has seen them lose control of games and confidence in recent weeks. Vipers have managed just two wins in their last 10 matches across all competitions, with a series of draws slowing their momentum at the most critical stage of the campaign.
Their Uganda Cup dream was shattered on Friday after Kitara FC knocked them out in the semifinals on the away goals rule following a 1-1 draw in Kitende. The painful elimination has intensified questions surrounding coach Ivan Minnaert and the team’s inability to close out important fixtures.
Even so, the Venoms remain firmly in command of the title race. Sitting on 61 points, three ahead of nearest challengers KCCA, Vipers know victory over Maroons would officially secure another league crown with one game to spare.
The situation is further boosted by their superior head-to-head record against KCCA, giving them an advantage even if both clubs eventually finish level on points.
But recent displays have left many supporters uneasy. The side has struggled to create dominance, with their latest league outing ending in a frustrating stalemate against Police FC at Kira Road.
Attention has also shifted to the future of Minnaert, with growing reports suggesting the Belgian tactician could still face uncertainty despite potentially delivering the league title. Club president Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa is believed to be dissatisfied with the team’s performances, particularly after visibly expressing frustration during the Uganda Cup exit.
Meanwhile, KCCA continue to lurk in the background hoping Vipers stumble again. The Kasasiro Boys, who face URA later today, are targeting maximum points to keep the championship race alive heading into the final round of the season.
