Bugahya county Member of Parliament, Pius Wakabi has commenced work as Kabaddi Federation President. This follows elections that were held on October 31, 2024 at the entity’s Matugga based headquarters.

He succeeds Hajjati Amina Mukasa the head teacher Kololo High. While addressing the press at Parliament on today, Friday November 21st, Wakabi vowed to fight for equity in sports funding.

“Personally, I want to advocate for fair allocation of sports resources. Because I feel it is very unfair for one federation to get sh19billion then another federation like Kabaddi and others get only sh10million,” he said.

Wakabi joins a growing array of federation presidents who also double as MPs. A case in point is Eng. Moses Magogo (Budiope East, NRM) who is the incumbent Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) President. However, he likened sports and his family to Siamese twins.

Members of The Kabaddi Federation of Uganda congragulating their new chairman Hon. Ivan Wakabi at parliament on Thursday.

“I hail from the family of the late Dr. Rujumba which donated 10 acres of land worth sh2billion where they are constructing the new Hoima City International stadium. I am a grandchild of Rujumba and I am the one who convinced the family to donate that land. I am also among the six directors of Kitara Football Club,” Wakabi added.

About Kabaddi

More like ‘Akawuna’, Kabaddi is a tug sport that is believed to have originated in India 4,000 years ago.  “Kabaddi is a sport that has seven players on board and five players as substitutes. A team therefore is made up of twelve players,” said Euphraim Desire Makubuya, the sport’s technical director.

“A player called a raider moves from his home or side and goes to the opponent’s side and whatever contact, he makes and goes back home safe, those are the points he scores,” he added.

That said, the sport has got other technical aspects such as the bonus and technical aspects. For the time, the sport has been in Uganda, several grassroot competitions have been organized.

On the continental frontier, the country’s ladies teams happens to be ranked number one having lifted the regional championship last year. The men on the other hand are ranked second in Africa and seventh in the world.
