The recent quarterfinal return leg between Bugema University and Muteesa I Royal University in the Pepsi University Football League was marred by fan violence, leading to the premature termination of the match.

The incident began when Muteesa fans entered the pitch, alleging assaults by Bugema supporters near a corner flag. Security personnel, including the Uganda Police Force and Bugema security guards, intervened but reportedly used excessive force, indiscriminately targeting individuals regardless of their affiliation.

In response, students attempted to confront the security forces but were ultimately overpowered and expelled from the pitch.

Following a 15-minute interruption, Muteesa officials directed their players not to resume play, citing safety concerns due to alleged assaults on their fans by Bugema supporters.

Consequently, referee Emmanuel Ouni, in consultation with the match assessor, decided to abandon the match. The presence of fans wielding large sticks made it challenging to distinguish between supporters of the two teams.

Muteesa’s contingent required substantial security to depart Bugema’s premises safely, all while chanting their university songs and the Buganda anthem.

With the aggregate score tied at 1-1, the University Football League disciplinary committee now faces the task of determining which team will advance to the semifinals.

Potential outcomes include ordering a replay, awarding a walkover to one team, or imposing sanctions on both institutions. This incident underscores the pressing need for enhanced security measures and stricter regulations to prevent violence in university sports, ensuring the safety and integrity of all participants.
