Buhimba Saints United’s quest for promotion to the Uganda Premier League was momentarily stalled following a dramatic 1-1 draw against Kaaro Karungi at Kyamate Ground in the FUFA Big League on Saturday.
The Saints looked set to take a significant step toward top-flight football when Martin Philip Opolot opened the scoring with a brilliant free-kick in the 6th minute, putting the visitors in early control and on course for a vital three points.
However, Clinton Kamugisha had other plans. In the dying moments of the match, the forward held his nerve to convert a stoppage-time penalty, rescuing a point for Kaaro Karungi and halting Buhimba’s celebrations for now.

Despite the late setback, Buhimba Saints United remain unbeaten in 12 matches, a streak that dates back to January when they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Kiyinda Boys. Since then, they have registered seven wins and five draws, maintaining their grip on the top spot with 49 points from 26 matches.
The Saints now need just four points from their remaining two fixtures—at home to Kigezi HomeBoyz and away to Kiyinda Boys—to guarantee automatic promotion. Their lead remains intact at four points above fourth-placed Blacks Power, who kept the pressure alive with a win earlier in the day against Ntugasaze.
Goalkeeper Ronald Mutebi was a standout performer for Buhimba, pulling off several key saves to protect their slim lead. Unfortunately, he was finally beaten in the 92nd minute, denying the Saints a league double over Kaaro Karungi. They had previously beaten them 2-1 in the reverse fixture at Kigaaya Playground.
For Kaaro Karungi, the result snapped a run of three straight defeats, though their winless streak extends to six matches. With just three draws and three losses in that period, they now sit perilously close to the relegation zone—only one point clear, with two games remaining.
Looking ahead, both teams return to action on Sunday, June 15. Kaaro Karungi will travel to face MYDA FC at Kangunga Playground, while Buhimba Saints United will host Kigezi HomeBoyz at Kigaaya Playground, with promotion still firmly in their sights.
