Colombia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana in Kansas City, ending the Black Stars’ campaign at the first knockout hurdle.
A first-half strike from Jhon Arias proved decisive as the South Americans held firm to eliminate Carlos Queiroz’s side and set up a last-16 meeting with Switzerland.
Colombia made their intentions clear from the outset and found the breakthrough in the 14th minute. Luis Suarez burst down the right flank before picking out Arias, who calmly powered his finish beyond goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
The early goal allowed Colombia to dictate much of the contest, enjoying the lion’s share of possession while forcing Ghana to spend long periods chasing the game.
Despite falling behind, the Black Stars refused to fold. Thomas Partey, Antoine Semenyo and later substitute Ernest Nuamah all looked to inspire a comeback, but Ghana struggled to break down a disciplined Colombian defence that rarely looked troubled.

Ati-Zigi was Ghana’s standout performer, producing a string of impressive saves to keep his side within touching distance. The goalkeeper denied Gustavo Puerta, Luis Diaz, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Fernando Quintero on several occasions to prevent Colombia from extending their advantage.
Queiroz introduced fresh attacking legs in the second half, throwing on Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Elisha Owusu and Nuamah in search of an equaliser. However, Colombia remained compact at the back and comfortably managed the closing stages to preserve their slender lead.
Although their World Cup journey ends in disappointment, Ghana leave the tournament with encouraging signs. The Black Stars reached the knockout rounds, competed strongly against quality opposition and demonstrated steady progress under Queiroz, providing a platform to build on ahead of future international assignments.
For Colombia, the narrow victory keeps alive their hopes of a deep run at the tournament as they now turn their attention to a mouth-watering Round of 16 showdown against Switzerland.
