Uganda’s women football team, the Crested Cranes defeated Ethiopia 2-0 in a faceoff at the Hamz stadium this evening in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers first leg.

The first goal of the match was scored by Zainah Nandede in the 89th minute and Fazila Ikwaput sealed off the hard fought victory in the 90+3 minutes.

The late hours two goals ahead of their opponents, energized the Crested Cranes to contain the tempo of the game throughout the playing time.

Uganda suffered an early setback in the 29th minute when defender Bridget Nabisalu was forced off due to injury, and replaced by Phiona Nabulime.

Before halftime, Resty Nanziri, Ikwaput, and Namuleme all tested Ethiopia’s defence but were unable to find a breakthrough.

Ikwaput earlier set up Resty Nanziri but the striker’s effort was weak hence being collected by Ethiopia’s goalkeeper Tarikwa Bergena.

Ikwaput was once again denied space to look at the goal, she was tightly marked from word go hence having a limited impact on the game.

The Crested Cranes coach, Sheryl Botes now head out for the second leg away game against Ethiopia with a comfortable lead. However, argues that much as the win is a positive node in their favor, the girls will focus on intensifying midfield handling tactics, which will edge them ahead of their physically fit opponents.

The return leg will be played 5 days later in Addis Ababa and the winner will meet either Tanzania or former champions equatorial guinea 3-1 in the first leg at Azam complex .
