U17 FIFA World Cup
Round of 32
Saturday, 3:30pm
Senegal v Uganda
Uganda Cubs head coach Brian Ssenyondo believes facing Senegal in the Round of 32 at the FIFA U17 World Cup is not just another knockout match it’s a chance for Uganda to measure itself against one of Africa’s finest football systems.
After guiding his young side to a historic 1–0 victory over France on Tuesday in Doha, Ssenyondo insists that the Cubs’ next mission is to prove that their triumph was no fluke. The French scalp may have sent shockwaves through the tournament, but the coach wants his team to build on that momentum rather than bask in past glory.
“We have immense respect for Senegal—they are one of the most complete sides in youth football,” Ssenyondo noted. “But this is football; we’ve earned our place here, and we’re going to fight. We want to show that Uganda can stand tall against the best, not just from Europe, but also Africa.”
The Saturday showdown with Senegal comes at a defining moment for the debutant Cubs, whose spirited run has already rewritten Uganda’s football history books. Their victory over France marked not only their first-ever win at any FIFA World Cup but also an emphatic arrival on the global stage.

Captain Hamuza Ssengooba, whose perfectly weighted pass set up James Bogere’s winner against the French, says the team’s morale is at an all-time high.
“We’ve learned so much from every game,” Ssengooba said. “Playing at this level against the best in the world is a dream for every young player. Facing Senegal, another African team, will be special. It’s going to be intense, but we are ready to give everything.”
Uganda will, however, need to be at their absolute best against a Senegal side that has been flawless so far. The West African champions topped Group C with seven points, scoring six goals and keeping three clean sheets—a testament to their discipline and balance.
Senegal’s youth football structure has been on a meteoric rise. In the past two years alone, they have clinched the U17 and U20 Africa Cup of Nations titles, as well as the CHAN 2023 crown, showcasing a seamless pipeline of talent. This will be their third consecutive appearance at the U17 World Cup, having reached the Round of 16 in both 2019 and 2023.
Still, Ssenyondo remains unfazed by the statistics. For him, the Cubs have already exceeded expectations everything from here is a statement of intent.
