East African representatives Uganda and Kenya endured a difficult start to the 27th Men’s Senior Handball Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the continental showcase threw off this Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
In a historic tournament hosted for the first time in the region, both nations faced established powerhouses, highlighting the bridge they must cross to compete with Africa’s handball elite.

Debutants Uganda had shown a good start scaring Angola in a spirited first Half
The Nile Kings, made their long-awaited continental debut against powerhouse Angola at the world-class BK Arena. Despite the eventual 37–21 scoreline, the Ugandans proved they belonged on the big stage with a gritty and disciplined first-half performance.
Uganda went into the halftime break trailing by just four goals at 15–11, having pushed the Angolans to their tactical limits. However, the experience and superior physical conditioning of the Southern Africans told in the second period, as they capitalized on Ugandan turnovers to pull away.

The match was a landmark moment for a Ugandan squad featuring rising stars like Prosper Wagaba and Gerald Pirwoth, who showed that the “Nile Kings” have the raw talent to compete if they can maintain their intensity for the full 60 minutes.
Kenya Falls to Resilient Guinea
Across the city at the Petit Stade, Kenya faced a tactically disciplined Guinea side in Group C. Despite a spirited second-half comeback attempt, the Kenyans were unable to close the early gap established by the West Africans, eventually falling 36–27. Guinea’s superior execution on the fast break proved to be the difference, leaving Kenya with a mountain to climb to reach the Main Round.

The Road to the 2027 World Cup
This 27th edition of the Handball AFCON is the most high-stakes tournament on the African calendar:
The Prize: The top five finishers in Kigali will officially qualify for the 2027 IHF Men’s World Championship in Germany and Denmark.
Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria are the only three nations to have ever won this trophy. Defending champions Egypt are the heavy favorites to make it four titles in a row this year.

The Format: The 16 teams are split into four groups. The top two from each group advance to the Main Round (Quarter-finals), while the others play for the President’s Cup to determine final rankings.
