Uganda Tennis Open, returns this weekend with a fresh twist—introducing a wheelchair tennis category for the first time in the competition’s history. The event will take place across two venues: the Lugogo Tennis Complex and Kampala Club, running from May 10 to 24.

Dating back to the 1980s, the tournament has grown into a regional showcase, attracting elite players from Uganda and beyond. This year’s edition will feature Singles and Doubles matches across both men’s and women’s categories.

Headlining the event are national stars and international representatives David Oringa, Simon Ayella, Patience Athieno, Winnie, Ernest Habyaambere, and Frank Tayebwa—all veterans of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup. They’ll be joined by defending champions Ismael Changawa of Kenya and Tanzania’s Shana Martin Mao.

In a major move toward inclusivity, organizers have added a wheelchair tennis category, which will be played in both men’s and women’s divisions alongside the traditional Juniors, Pro Event (18+), and Veterans (40+) categories.

For the first time, a Ugandan will officiate the tournament as chief referee. Charles Wanyama will oversee proceedings, marking a significant milestone for local tennis officiating.

The competition will open on May 10, with the Juniors playing at Lugogo and the Veterans at Kampala Club. The Pro Event kicks off on May 19 at Lugogo.

A total prize pool of Shs 20 million has been earmarked, with Kansai Plascon serving as the tournament’s principal sponsor.
