The Uganda rugby community has united in grief following the death of Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates forward Sydney Gongodyo, prompting the suspension of one of the season’s biggest fixtures.

Uganda Rugby confirmed on Saturday that the Stanbic Black Pirates versus Platinum Credit Heathens Premiership semi-final, originally scheduled for Sunday, June 7, has been postponed as players, officials and supporters come to terms with the loss of the national team player.

The decision forms part of a series of measures introduced by the governing body to honour Gongodyo’s contribution to the sport. All sanctioned rugby matches taking place this weekend will begin with a moment of silence, while national team players and officials will wear black armbands in upcoming engagements.

Uganda Rugby President Godwin Arinaitwe Kayangwe described the deceased as a dedicated servant of both club and country whose impact extended beyond the field of play.

Gongodyo was a key figure for Black Pirates and represented the Rugby Cranes with distinction, earning respect from teammates, opponents and fans alike for his commitment, professionalism and character.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the rugby fraternity, Uganda Rugby has pledged to support both Black Pirates Rugby Club and Gongodyo’s family during this difficult period and ensure that the fallen player receives a fitting farewell.

A new date for the postponed semi-final will be communicated in due course.
