After a decade-long hiatus, the Kateregga Memorial Schools and Institutions Table Tennis Championship is back, promising to reignite the passion for Uganda’s fastest-growing racket sport. Scheduled from Friday to Sunday at the MTN Indoor Arena, Lugogo, the three-day event has already captured the imagination of schools and fans nationwide.
The championship has received a significant boost with two major sponsors stepping in. Legacy Productions Limited is contributing Sh40 million to provide professional audio-visual coverage, while School Pay has pledged Sh5 million to support event logistics.
UTTA president Cyrus Muwanga hailed the sponsorships as a vote of confidence in the association’s leadership and vision. “This isn’t just financial support—it reflects trust in the structures we’ve built and the credibility of our tournaments. It motivates us to deliver a championship that challenges players and excites spectators,” Muwanga said.
Legacy Productions’ director, Jude Ssempembwa, revealed plans for a high-quality broadcast setup for the tournament. “Our aim is to give players and fans an immersive experience with professional graphics, live production, and videos that raise the sport’s profile to international standards,” he noted.
Meanwhile, School Pay CEO Charity Atukwase Mutagambwa stressed the company’s focus on nurturing holistic development through sports. “We see sports as a vital tool for building children’s character and skills. Our partnership with UTTA, which began last year, is about creating a long-lasting impact on young athletes,” Mutagambwa said.
The competition has already attracted more than 40 schools, signaling the growing interest in table tennis at the grassroots level. Beyond the sport, the championship honours the late Francis Kateregga, a legendary Ugandan table tennis player who brought the nation glory at the All-Africa Games before his passing in 1997.
With top young talent preparing to showcase their skills, the revived Kateregga Memorial promises not just thrilling matches, but a platform to inspire the next generation of Ugandan table tennis stars.
